INTRODUCTION
While the Worms series have been around for a while, started 2D, went 3D, returned to 2D, somewhere during those transitions this unique game launched, specifically in November 2004. While the reviews were averaging at 6.5/10 it was a more special Worms game. Personally I really enjoyed playing it at the time and I still play it nowadays from time to time.
I'm pretty sure the real Ancient Egyptians didn't shoot bishops out of mortars. |
It features the lovely Worms, not the only 3D Worms so what's special?
Well, as the name says it features FORTS. Yep FORTS.. But wait, not everyone played a Worms game, so let's talk a bit about how the Worms games play. Well it's a 3D artillery tactical game. you get x Worms(usually 4) and you take turns with your foes as you each use your time to move your worm, use a weapon from the arsenal and in case of Forts Under Siege build. The games in the series usually feature destructible environment but this one doesn't as the objective is to either kill the enemy worms or destroy their main building, the stronghold. So far so good, yeah? Well yeah, but the camera and movements tend to be a bit clunky but that doesn't stop the game from being pleasant in murdering worms with helmets. So okay, we just kill those worms and end of story? Well in multiplayer yes but the game also has a campaign mode with story and missions stretching around 4 thematic eras. Egyptian, Greek, Oriental and Medieval, thing which is also reflected in your structures design.
A sad little gladiator lost in a different era. |
Cartoonish? bah.... bbbut for some reason those age well !
Despite it's age the game still looks pretty well. Being cartoonish has it's perks, I guess. The game still looks lovely, the animations and sounds are funny and sometimes I play the game just for that but the only bit that aged badly was the UI. While it remains big on the screen, which is a good thing especially at 4k, it tends to look a bit blurry.
umm mate, samurai, that is your own stronghold! |
How does it fare on my modest modern system?
Well it is install and play if you purchased it from GoG otherwise you might need to use AlexBond's Worms Forts: Under Siege Launcher found on WSGF [LINK] to set up your resolution.
Something is not right with those medieval worms. Kung-fu? |
Wrap-up time!
While this game departed a bit from the classic Worms formula, didn't get the highest marks, and the camera controls are a bit messy, it's worth picking it on a sale on GoG to have some, dare I say quality time both locally and online with your friends. Then again it's better to pick Worms Ultimate Mayhem for 3D and Worms WMD for 2D.
