Introduction
With 2018 ending in a few days it's time to check out what were the most enjoying releases I've had the chance to play this year. Of course this is all based on personal experience with each game.2018 PC GOTY: Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire
One could say Obsidian were at the top of their game with PoE2: Deadfire. The world building, questing and general writing are top notch and while the game is a classic Infinity Engine-RPG it manages to make the Deadfire Archipelago familiar and alien at the same time while also giving you the job of maintaining and crewing a ship. Every small quest can have an interesting moment or explode into something crazy and unexpected. Best of all is that all the information in the game is enough to act as a standalone and not requiring you to have played the first game or keep a lore wiki open on a second screen to understand what's happening.
2018 PC Best Survival Game: Fallout 76
Please hear me out before you get your forks ready and hunt me. Living aside the PR nightmare around F76 and treating bugs like normal( it's a Bethesda game after all and after putting a 60 hours in the first few launch days I could say older Bethesda games were just as bad in this department) Fallout76 does a lot right. While not being the MMORPG Fallout most would've wanted, the game simply takes the survival formula, the fallout world, lots of background lore that can be discovered and a big world and leaves you to survive after leaving your shelter. Between playing with your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. abilities and surviving out there, you also have time to build your small home without requiring tons of resources like in other survival games like Ark or Conan Exiles. Being also set in the Fallout universe with plenty of lore laying around it also allows for a olid roleplaying experience both with friends and with strangers. Things of course could have been better, but what the game set to do right, it nailed it.
2018 PC Best Racing Game: Forza Horizon 4
While no longer set in a more exotic place like Australia, FH4 managed to surprise us with an idyllic British landscape that can be explored in all the four seasons. Plenty of cars, tuning, open world and multiplayer can keep you busy for hours and hours either racing, exploring or participating in playground games with others. Take your favorite car, tune it to your liking, make it a track car, an offroad car, drift car or drag car and press the pedal to the metal.... or the up key or the (A) button.
To be continued...
