Battle Royale Perfected?Oh and some other modes.... Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII Review

Introduction

With PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds(PUBG) and Fortnite leading the market, you might probably think there isn't room for another game? That's where you'd be wrong. With Black Ops IIII(4/IV) we get a taste of Call of Duty battle Royale and some will probably feel the lack of campaign. Let's see what is all about
Jumping down into the game... join me!

Gameplay

While not featuring a campaign which is a first for a Call of Duty game, it does feature the classic Multiplayer and Zombie modes while also adding Blackout, which is the Battle Royale mode.

The classic UI experience in Multiplayer.... well at least in Heist
So let's begin with the Classic Multiplayer mode, which makes a return from the previous game. This mode is centered around specialists, 6 returning from the previous game and 4 new specialists. With it's "story" centered between Black Ops II and III you can take on the classic modes that are a staple to CoD series like Free-for-All and Team Deathmatch which is now cut down to 5v5 instead of 6v6. Also There are two new game modes called Control and Heist. In Control there are 2 points on the map A and B which are static and one team must capture them while the other has to defend them. and Heist takes it's inspiration from Counter Strike. You start with a pistol and can spend money on weapons, armor and other gear at the start of each round while the objective is to take the cash and take it to the extraction point or kill the enemy team. But probably the biggest change is the removal of automatic regeneration in favor of a health bar and a periodically recharging healing skill which forces them to play more tactically.

Hoping to find someone on the map. #battleroyalelife

Blackout is the new addition to the series and is practically Call of Duty meets PUBG. The mode runs very smooth, shooting feels good and a bit easier to control than PUBG but still takes skill. The nicest thing is that while you obviously still pick stuff from the ground it gets automatically attached to your weapons or right slots. You got body armor on 3 levels, it can only be played in first person, but you can get on very high buildings, use elevators and climb harder to reach places. also you can get boxes that give you certain boosts for short periods of time like running faster, healing faster, etc. Overall it's a very fast paced and polished Battle Royale experience.

The Blackout Menu is unexpectedly CLEAN and fast to read

The trademark Zombie mode has lots of content available from the start, with 2 maps focused on a new narrative called the Chaos Story set on the titanic and in ancient Rome and the third map being a remake of the black ops 2 map, Blood of the Dead, following the Aether story. While you can through the classic zombie game or the new rush mode, you can also create your own rule-set for the Zombies mode. You can also create your own custom class which lets you equip any 4 elixirs from all available, choose a special weapon that is on a cool-down and choose which perks you want to spawn on the map.

Well I guess we all know what actually went wrong on the Titanic.

While I still played on Blackout I still noticed there are some server issues, even lowering server tick rate to 20HZ but it's still solid enough to provide fun experience, albeit with a few issues here and there.

Graphics

well the game looks colorful but the engine starts showing it's age, and not looking the sharpest for 2018 but I'd rather take Black Ops IIII, only lower a few settings and get a decent performance in Blackout rather than going almost all the way down with graphical settings, at least at 4k in games like PUBG. And for the classic multiplayer and zombie mode the action is too fast paced to have time to notice the engine's downside. Overall It's ok but not great.

From grasslands to arid areas, you're covered in Blackout

Audio

Well one thing I appreciated in Call of Duty games, even though there were plenty I didn't honestly like playing, was the sound quality and soundtrack, and Black Ops IIII keeps that standard in place. Weapons, explosions, running and environmental sounds really carry some weight, helping you feel them rather than just hearing some pre-recorded sounds. The soundtrack though isn't really that noticeable and it just blends in with the situation(menu, event, etc).

Guess the Romans don't mind modern weapons

Wrap-up

While certainly having some launch problems, especially server sided, Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII manages to deliver a solid fps experience and can justify making you pay 60eur for a game without a campaign. If you want some multiplayer fun, or a more refined Battle Royale experience then Black Ops IIII should definitely be wish-listed.
